Is Paris France the City of Love? My answer is a clear Yes, a resounding Yes. Couples from around the globe love visiting Paris, and one of the reasons behind is its reputation as the “City of Love”. In fact, the French capital is like a living painting, with its iconic Eiffel Tower, standing tall as a symbol of resilience and loyalty. You can also witness lovers walking through the charming streets of Montmartre or alongside the Seine River. And let's not forget about its art, architecture, literature, cinema, or simply the magical encounters at the Parisian cafés.

Is Paris France the City of Love?

Romantic spots

"Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" is the motto of France. But I guess one could resume all of these words in only one word: “Love”. Because Paris, the French capital, is a city that resonates with romance through its architecture, culture, literature, people… Is there something more romantic than going to Paris to exchange vows and promise your soulmate that you will love him/her no matter what, for better and for worse? For me, almost nothing. Wherever you go, you can feel that love is in the air! And the numerous romantic spots there are good examples: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Montmartre, the Seine River, or even the Parisian cafés

1. Eiffel Tower

Is Paris France The City of Love - Eiffel Tower

I must admit that ascending the Eiffel Tower is a must, particularly if you are visiting Paris for the first time. The 135-year-old building stands as one of the most iconic monuments of Paris… and France. Reaching the summit is a truly unforgettable experience; and one way to do it is to climb the 674 stair steps to the second floor, then use the lift, like I did during my visit. It was a unique and exciting experience for me. I couldn't help but feel that it also represents resilience and loyalty (like in a couple) as the tower has stood the test of time...

2. Montmartre

Montmarte

Are you an aesthete? Do you have a refined sensitivity to the beautiful landscapes and art? Montmartre, with its historic charm, is the place for you to be. With its architecture that have been standing for centuries, its rustic alleys, its cozy little cafes, its romantic atmosphere, or its stunning views of the city, Montmartre holds a special place in my heart. During my visit, I was seduced by its beauty. The heart of Montmartre is right on Rue des Abbesses where you will find bars, cafes and the Square Jehan Rictus. It is home to the famous white-domed church, the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, as well as the old church of Saint Pierre de Montmartre; both places are worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.

3. "Mur des je t'aime"

Mur des je t'aimes

“Je t’aime”, “Ich liebe Dich”, “Wo ai ni”, “Mi aime jou”, “Te amo”, “Ek het jou liefe”… Adorned with the phrase "I love you" inscribed 311 times in 250 languages and dialects, the enchanting "Mur des je t'aime", at the Square Jehan Rictus, is a captivating artwork. Upon my visit, I made a point of visiting the “I love you” wall. It's a pretty ‘normal’ wall, but with a powerful message: love is universal! At least, that's the feeling I had when visited it. This place deserves to be discovered.

4. Notre-Dame Cathedral

Notre-Dame Cathedral

We can’t visit Paris and forget to take a side trip to the Notre-Dame Cathedral! I guess that everyone would agree with me! Commonly referred to as Notre-Dame, this architectural masterpiece stands as one of the most iconic monuments not only in Paris but throughout France. When I first saw it, I was amazed by its grandeur and beauty. It’s an imposing monument, with its intricate Gothic design. You can feel the cultural backgrounds; a monument which has survived wars, revolutions, and the passage of time itself. But unfortunately, on 15th of April 2019, a fire broke out at Notre-Dame, destroying large parts of the church. Meanwhile, a restoration project has been under way. The Cathedral should reopen in December 2024.

5. Louvre Museum

Louvre Museum

No, this isn't just a story – it's real. And let me tell you, the experience of standing in front of the Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa at the Louvre is absolutely extraordinary. “La Joconde” is just an icon, a masterpiece. There is also a huge variety of other artworks to see; and to be honest with you, one day is just not enough to go and see all these works at the museum. But the Louvre is well worth a visit for both young and old alike. The artworks have endured through the ages, leaving their mark on French history and culture. It’s like a cultural discovery; as I moved through the world’s most iconic paintings, sculptures, architectural wonders, the palace seemed like a labyrinth of romantic culture, emotions, love, passion, and beauty.

6. Tuileries Garden

Tuileries Garden

Calmness, serene atmosphere, relaxing promenade… Walking through the Tuileries Garden, one of the enchanting gardens of Paris, it’s like breathing peace and enjoying liberty. Classified as a historic monument, the garden, located within the Place de la Concorde, offers a tranquil escape for its visitors, and lovers. You can hear birds singing. Its alleys, lined with trees, are magnificent; a perfect picture for a romantic getaway. The Tuileries Garden is like an open-air sculpture park, filled with statues, fountains, ponds and flowers. Within its surroundings, you can see the Place de la Concorde, the Louvre, and the Arc de Triomphe. For sure, it soothes the senses. It’s worth the trip!

7. Champs-Élysées

Champs Elysées

It is on the list of the top attractions of Paris. The Champs-Élysées can make a picture-postcard scene to represent the beautiful culture of France. Nearly 2 kilometers long, the 17th century Avenue runs from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe. What would be better than a ‘short’ walk at the Champs-Élysées on a Sunday afternoon? Walking along the avenue with your lover, it is just a romantic and quality time to enjoy.

8. Parisian café

Parisan Cafes

Parisian cafés are magical places where you can meet people or watch couples share intimate moments. With their lively terraces and bohemian atmosphere, in a cozy cocoon, Parisian cafés served as the backdrop for magical encounters, enriching the city's romantic allure. Seated at a table in a Parisian cafés, savoring your coffee, is a great way to meet people and connect to yourself – that’s what I did when I was there.

Some top proposal spots

The Trocadéro Gardens, situated across the river from the Eiffel Tower, forms part of the top proposal spots in Paris. It offers a romantic setting with its sculptures and a central fountain. I would definitely say 'yes' if my partner proposed to me in such a spot. What about the Champ de Mars park? This vast green expanse, well-known for picnics, is also an excellent location for a proposal. What will make your proposal special? The view of the Eiffel Tower in the background. But that's not all – there is also the Seine River, which offers a picturesque setting. You can even take a boat ride with your loved one; or take a few photos at the Pont de Bir-Hakeim, to immortalize the moment.

Mythical couples

Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Marais and Jean Cocteau, Lucile and Camille Desmoulins, Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, Pierre and Marie Curie... The history of the capital is punctuated by that of mythical couples who left their mark on their time. Parisian culture has also inspired literary, musical and cinematic masterpieces focused on love. From classics like "Romeo and Juliet" to "Amélie Poulain," Paris has provided the backdrop for timeless love stories. The French capital has also been the backdrop for legendary love stories such as that of Quasimodo and Esmeralda, heroes of Victor Hugo's novel and Notre-Dame de Paris.

Romantic movement

Paris earned its well-deserved title as the "City of Love" during the 19th century, owing to the influence of the Romantic Movement and the renowned poets and artists of that period. Over time, as tourists flocked to the French capital, the city not only preserved but solidified its reputation through its art, architecture, cinema, literature, and charming people. Struggling artists – painters, writers, and poets – gathered in cafes and shape the world anew.

Capturing the Romance

On average, ten film shoots take place every day in the streets of Paris, according to the Paris city hall. And for Hollywood, the French capital is synonymous with chic, elegance, and love. Throughout history, the Seventh Art has provided a romantic vision of the French capital through films such as "Les Enfants du Paradis," "An American in Paris," "Breathless," "Amélie," "French Kiss," "Midnight in Paris," "Emily in Paris," projecting a certain image…

My journey’s end note

Amidst the cultural richness of its museums, the tranquility of its gardens, and the warmth of its cafes, I have discovered a city full of life, of love, and hope. Through its art, literature, cinema, or the "Mur des je t'aime", the French capital convey a clear message: love is universal. And Paris continues to inspire countless love stories, earning its well-deserved title as the "City of Love."
